It’s not blind luck that BOB jogging strollers are the first choice of many active and athletic parents. Just like it’s not blind luck that automobiles such as the Mercedes are a popular and sought-after car for people who appreciate quality to drive. When something is truly well made, even when it costs a little more, many people will (smartly) look more at the value of the object rather than simply the cost.
It is no secret that BOB joggers are not cheap. They are going to be at the higher end of the range when it comes to strollers you’re likely to see on a day to day basis. They aren’t Walmart ‘blue light special’ strollers by any means. But then again, if you’re into doing some serious running, jogging, training on rough terrain, or simply appreciate well made, well engineered equipment, you wouldn’t expect to find such a thing in a bargain basement type of environment.
There is a time and a place for just about everything. I have been in situations multiple times where all we needed was something to push the kids around in for a weekend and we didn’t have a stroller (this was when we had guests from overseas visiting who had a little one but weren’t able to pack their stroller). In such a circumstance, finding an inexpensive stand-in stroller worked just fine. But, when it came time to take our own family out for weekly hikes on some rough paths… then it was time to step up and get some real gear.
And BOB strollers are about as ‘real gear’ as you are likely to find anywhere.
Made by an engineer and a mountain biking enthusiast, these guys used to build off-road bike trailers. They know how to dish out abuse and how to make equipment to withstand it. And that is exactly what they did when they switched their company focus from bike trailers (originally called "Beasts of Burden", which eventually got shortened to just "BOB"), and they started making strollers to be used for jogging and off-road use.
The love for well made equipment and the love for sharing the outdoors with the whole family is easy to see in the gear BOB puts out these days. It is made from high quality aircraft grade aluminum chromoly and steel bearings like you would find on a real mountain bike. Many of their competitors use simple and cheap plastic parts where steel and aluminum are found on the BOB strollers.
Another great feature borrowed from the mountain biking world is the use of an adjustable shock absorber coupled with larger wheels and tires that actually hold air for a smoother ride. Now, whether your jogging on pavement or hiking on a dirt trail, your child (or children, if you’re using a BOB double stroller), can still ride in comfort without getting jostled around too much.
Another great innovation you can find on some of the BOB strollers, namely the BOB Revolution models, is the 360 degree, fully rotating front wheel that can quickly and easily be locked in place as well.
What is so great about this feature, you might ask? I’m glad you did!
You see, with the front wheel able to freely swivel all the way around, the steering on these strollers is incredibly smooth and easy. In fact, most people can effortlessly steer even a BOB double stroller with just one hand. This makes for great maneuverability even in tight areas such as the grocery store or shopping mall.
But the problem with a swiveling front wheel is that if you are jogging at a reasonable speed, or if you are on rough terrain, you want your front wheel locked in place so it will keep your stroller tracking straight and true. With BOB’s locking mechanism, you can now have the best of both worlds in a mere couple of seconds it takes to lock the wheel in place with a pin.
We have only touched on some of the more obvious benefits that come with the BOB jogging strollers in this article, but hopefully you are able to see some of the real value that it offers its users. There is no doubt that you will pay a bit more for one, but the safety, comfort and ease of use make it more than worthwhile in this writers opinion. And when you look at the popularity of these strollers on the market and the tremendous resale value that they maintain, it would seem that I am not alone.
